Camarillo, located in Ventura County, California, is a city rich in history and vibrant in contemporary culture. It was incorporated on October 22, 1964, and named after Adolfo and Juan Camarillo, two prominent Californios who founded the city.
The area of Camarillo covers 19.70 square miles and has an elevation of 177 feet. As of the 2020 United States Census, Camarillo had a population of 70,741, showing a notable increase from the 65,201 counted in the 2010 Census. The city operates under the governance of Mayor Shawn Mulchay and is part of the 805 area code region
Camarillo’s history dates back to the time of European contact in the 18th century when it was inhabited by the Chumash Indians. The area that is now Camarillo and the larger Oxnard Plain were integral parts of a paramount Chumash capital. The Chumash village of Simo’mo, which translates to “the saltbush patch”, was located near what is now Camarillo. Additionally, the region is home to ancient caves with pictographs and sites used for religious ceremonies dating back to 500 A.D. The city’s growth was initially slow but picked up significantly post-World War II, with agriculture being a major industry in the region. Camarillo’s development was further facilitated by the completion of the Ventura Freeway in the mid-1950s, which made travel to Los Angeles much more accessible
